Surgical Dermatology

Skin surgery,
in our offices.

Dr. Brown has advanced training in skin surgery and has performed thousands of in-office procedures for the removal of both benign and cancerous growths. Most procedures are completed in a single visit.

Why in-office

Modern procedure rooms,
cost-conscious medicine.

Seeing a skilled surgical dermatologist means you're not only properly diagnosed — you're treated in the most cosmetically sensitive fashion. Procedures are performed in modern procedure rooms with surgical exam chairs and dedicated lighting. In an era of high deductibles, outpatient procedures lead to a much lower total cost than the same procedure performed in a hospital or surgical center.

01 / Procedure

Removal of benign skin growths

There are a variety of benign skin growths that may bother a patient — cysts, lipomas (fatty growths), moles, and birthmarks. The team is trained to evaluate, diagnose, and remove these lesions. We discuss your removal options and determine the best approach given the location, size, and your priorities.

02 / Specialty

Nail surgery

Dr. Brown has significant experience in nail surgery for both the diagnosis and treatment of nail disorders and nail tumors. Skin cancer can occur on the nail and is often diagnosed later than cancer of the skin because of patient and provider reluctance to biopsy. Dr. Brown has performed hundreds of nail surgeries and works to put you at ease and minimize discomfort during and after the procedure.

03 / Procedure

Removal of skin tags

Dr. Brown has numerous methods to remove skin tags. Smaller tags can be treated with liquid nitrogen or electrocautery; larger tags are removed procedurally — the skin is anesthetized, the tag is removed in seconds, and a minor scrape heals over the following days.

04 / Procedure

Removal of skin cysts

Many patients arrive having lived with a cyst for years, worried that removal will require general anesthesia or significant pain. It doesn't. Cyst removals are quick and well-tolerated under local anesthetic, and we work to minimize scarring at the removal site.

05 / Oncology

Excision of skin cancers

Dr. Brown and the team follow National Comprehensive Cancer Network guidelines for the treatment of skin cancers, including basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and melanoma. Most cases are treated in-office by excision; when a more specialized referral is warranted, we coordinate it and follow up so you're not on your own to figure out the next step.

06 / Oncology

Alternative cancer treatments

Some skin cancers can be treated with procedures other than surgical excision — including electrodessication and curettage performed in-office, or topical and intralesional chemotherapy. The team counsels you on all available options and helps you choose the right approach for the tumor and your priorities.

07 / Specialty

Surgical scar revision

If you have an old surgical or traumatic scar, Dr. Brown has worked on prior wounded warriors in the U.S. Army to perform surgical scar revision. These procedures can be technically difficult, so seeking a skilled dermatologist matters. The team walks you through the process and expectations before scheduling.

What to expect

Before, during, and after
your procedure.

Most in-office dermatologic procedures take 30–60 minutes from start to finish. Local anesthetic is used; you're awake and comfortable. Aftercare instructions are reviewed in person and sent home in writing.

Before

What to bring

Photo ID, insurance card, and a current medication list. If you take blood thinners or have recent lab work, bring that information so the team can plan accordingly.

During

The procedure

The area is cleaned, marked, and numbed with local anesthetic. The procedure is performed; you're awake and able to talk with the provider throughout. Bleeding is controlled and the wound is closed or dressed before you leave.

After

Aftercare

You go home the same day. Wound-care instructions are reviewed before you leave and sent home in writing. A follow-up visit is typically scheduled for suture removal or wound check. The team is reachable by phone if anything concerns you.
